Why You Don’t Feel Lean And Why Your Body Isn’t the Problem
There’s a quiet frustration many women carry. You move your body. You eat “well”. You’re consistent. Disciplined. Committed. And yet your body doesn’t shrink. It doesn’t feel like it used too. I can’t get lighter, leaner, toned. If anything, it feels heavier. Puffier. Inflamed. You start wondering what you’re doing wrong.
Here’s the truth most women are never told:
Your body isn’t failing you.
It’s protecting you.
Especially if you’re in your 40s or older.
The Body Changes and The Rules Must Change Too
At 48, if you are like me then your physiology is not the same as it was at 28. Hormones fluctuate differently. Recovery takes longer. Stress registers faster. And the nervous system becomes far more influential than macros in and out. What once worked more movement, less food, push harder now backfires. Because a female body under stress doesn’t lean out. It armours up. I must admit when I was in my 30’s and hitting peak in my early forties, I did not see this coming. The body response or hormone response is entirely different after 45 and if you doubt just wait and see.
The Hidden Stress No One Talks About
Most women trying to “get lean” are unknowingly doing this:
•High training volume
•Long cardio sessions
•Minimal rest
•Under-fuelled meals
•Constant output
On paper, it looks healthy. In the body, it reads as threat. The nervous system hears: “We’re working hard, resources are low, and recovery isn’t guaranteed.” So the body responds intelligently:
•Cortisol rises
•Inflammation increases
•Fluid is retained
•Fat loss halts
Not because you’re lazy. But because your system is trying to keep you safe. The more you do the puffier you become. I tested this fact.
Why Eating Less Makes It Worse
Many women in this phase are dramatically under-eating without realising it. One egg. A coffee. A light lunch. A “clean” dinner. For a body doing daily movement, strength work, cardio, life stress, emotional load this isn’t discipline. It’s deprivation. And deprivation tells the body to slow metabolism, conserve energy, and hold weight. Leanness after 40 does not come from eating less. It comes from eating enough especially protein, carbohydrates, and nourishing fats. It also comes down to mindfully eating, slowly and honouring the body. This helps to nourish and allow the digestive system to feel safe thus allowing the nervous system to absorb the nutrients and use them properly.
The Luteal Phase Truth (The Week Before Your Period)
This is where women are most unfair to themselves. In the days before bleeding if you still are then:
•Estrogen drops
•Progesterone fluctuates
•Water retention increases
•Digestion slows
•The body naturally softens
Trying to look “tight” or “tiny” during this phase is biologically unrealistic. Your body isn’t inflamed because you failed. It’s cycling exactly as it should. It clearing and again keeping you safe. It is a glorious time even if it annoying and uncomfortable. If we can mindfully frame it as a biological cleanse we can begin to feel safe.
Cardio Isn’t the Villain but It’s Not the Answer
Long endurance sessions may burn calories, but they also:
•Elevate cortisol
•Reduce muscle signal
•Flatten tone
•Increase stress load
At this stage of life, muscle is the magic. Shorter, intentional strength sessions send a clear message: “We are strong. We are safe. We can release.” That’s when bodies change. By adding Add weight training it is a must for over 40’s
What Healthy Lean Actually Means Now
Let’s redefine it. Lean is not tiny. Lean is not depleted. Lean is not rigid. We are living in an era of the NEW tiny, but it is not classed as lean it is classed as nervous system dysregulation. What’s striking is not just the weight loss, but the speed and the uniformity. Frames shrinking, muscle softening, faces narrowing. The visual culture frames this as “health” or “discipline,” but biology tells a more nuanced story. From a bioenergetic perspective, rapid thinness is rarely a sign of optimal regulation. More often, it reflects suppression, under-fuelling, or altered appetite signalling, not long-term vitality.
Healthy Lean is:
•Calm nervous system
•Strong muscles
•Stable hormones
•Reduced inflammation
•A body that trusts you
And trust comes from consistency, nourishment, and rest not punishment. But more importantly a functional brain that can maintain focus and sees beyond the rigidity of physicality.
The Shift That Changes Everything
When women stop fighting their bodies and start listening, something profound happens. They move less but with intention. They eat more without fear. They rest without guilt. And the body responds. Not instantly. Not dramatically. But steadily. Because once a woman’s body feels safe, it no longer needs to hold on.
One Final b.Truth
If your body isn’t changing, it’s not stubborn. It’s speaking. And when you stop asking, “Why am I not tiny?” and start asking, “What does my body need to feel safe?” Everything changes. This one sentence made me swallow deeply. It may make you tear up. We must learn to feel safe in our own body. I am here to show you how.
