Top Nootropics That Support Gut Microbes

I began research into nootropics in 2020 when things got a bit crazy in the world. I always choose to seek knowledge to learn more to find alternatives and to thrive. I will not risk my health – one life – one opportunity will you learn about it?

These are my favourite gut nootropics.

1. Lion’s Mane Mushroom (Hericium erinaceus)

•Promotes growth of nerve cells and gut mucosa.

•Prebiotic properties — supports beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus.

•Helps with focus, memory, and gut lining repair.

2. L-Theanine – My fave product is – CALM by Savvy

•Calms the nervous system without sedation.

•Reduces gut-driven anxiety by balancing the vagus nerve.

•Enhances alpha brain waves (calm focus) and supports serotonin balance via gut pathways.

3. Curcumin (from Turmeric)

•Potent anti-inflammatory for both gut and brain.

•Helps protect gut lining and encourages microbial diversity.

•Boosts BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) for learning and mood.

4. Polyphenols (from plants like blueberries, green tea, cacao)

•Feed good bacteria that create brain-beneficial compounds (like short-chain fatty acids).

•Improve memory and calm inflammation that affects both gut & brain.

5. Prebiotic Fiber (Inulin, Acacia, Resistant Starch)

•Technically not a “nootropic,” but essential for gut-brain communication.

•Supports microbes that produce butyrate, which strengthens the gut barrier and sharpens cognition.

6. Bacopa Monnieri

•Ancient Ayurvedic brain herb that also soothes the enteric nervous system (gut brain).

•Reduces stress-induced gut issues, helps with learning, focus, and resilience.

7. Omega-3 DHA & EPA

•Regulate gut inflammation and support microbial diversity.

•Improve neuronal communication and emotional balance.

8. Probiotic strains (specific nootropic ones):

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG — boosts GABA and lowers stress reactivity.

Bifidobacterium longum 1714 — improves memory & stress resilience.

Lactobacillus plantarum — supports serotonin and gut integrity.

Stacking gentle adaptogens (like ashwagandha or rhodiola) with prebiotic foods (like green banana, oats, or onions) and a probiotic gives you the best gut-brain synergy.

It’s the holistic “nootropic trio” — feed the microbes → calm the nervous system → focus the mind. It all starts with what you consume. Choose wisely to become well.

Health and Happiness,

b.x
