Teaching kids about fitness for life✔
Teaching children about fitness and health has been my life. I began teaching children about fitness in the surf in my younger years. I then studied my Bachelor degree in Health and Physical Education and totally fell in love with my career.
I still to this day teach fitness, health and wellness aspects to these young minds.
However in all these years I have noticed some key factors changing which include:
It is not just about sport and competition.
We need to teach valuable and simple fitness activities because not every young person/ child wants to compete. Personally, my son will NOT compete with anyone and he finds the whole competiton aspect of sport difficult. He simply wants to have fun and enjoy the outdoors.
My daughter on the other hand loves to compete and thrives on the sporting competition.
So how do I keep their balance in our family?
In the beginning, we walked or ran with the children in the pram everyday. It was always early in the morning to begin the simple routine of fitness for all. To this day we continue to walk, run every morning as a lil’ family. Somedays the lil’crew will ride bikes, scooters in order for them to get around the walking path we travel. We would then come home and have the same options for breakfast as we have always had (oats, fruit and yogurt, toast, eggs, tea and on the Sundays it’s bacon and eggs or pancakes.
Fitness also need to be fun and with every walk or run it is seen as an outdoor family activity that is a routine. We discuss reasons why we do this. I will also explain this the children reasons why we need exercise for our bodies and reasons why we eat the foods we do > it is all real facts and real adult type discussions. When I am also at school teaching the group of year 4 children Fitness every morning we discuss key facts about our bodies and how to maintain them thoroughly.
You see I believe we need to bring our children up with real knowledge of their bodies, facts about how it works and why we need to look after it. The truth is we don’t need to compete in sport, we need to have fitness lifestyle and that is all. Not everyone can be an elite athlete however everyone can be fit and well for a better life span and happiness.
